Q?I AM CONFUSED WITH STEM CELL TERMINOLOGY, I NEED SOME CLARIFICATION.

Embryonic Stem Cells (ESC): Within 24-hours of a sperm fertilizing an egg, the egg begins dividing into two, then four cells, and so on exponentially (those are Embryonic Stem Cells), until it becomes a hollow ball of cells called a blastocyst. This process is here interrupted for the harvest of ESC. If not interrupted, it is three weeks later that the blastocyst cells begin differentiating, starting with nerve cells. The cells from the moment of conception to the eighth week of pregnancy are called embryo. After the eighth week and until the moment of birth, it is called a fetus. Depending on where/when they are harvested, the healing potential of Stem Cells will differ.
A1 Stem Cells harvests Embryonic Stem Cells after 4 to 5 days of divisions from a blastocyst left over from in vitro fertilization. The blastocyst of 150 or so cells is extracted and cultured in petri dish. The 150 cells will divide into millions of ESC. Those ESC have the capability of becoming any type of cell, they are pluripotent. The cultured ESC are then mixed with plasma and ready for injection.

Autologous embryonic stem cellsEmbryonic stem cells that are derived from an embryo prepared through the cloning of one of your cells.

Induced pluripotent stem cell (IPS): are adult cells reprogrammed to behave like embryonic stem cells. While iPS cells are an exciting discovery, these cells could never be used in patients because the use of viruses to reprogram these adult cells predisposes the cells to cancer. As a result, these cells cannot replace the use of embryonic stem cells.

Adult stem cells: also known as tissue-specific stem cells, are present in adults, children, newborn infants and developing fetuses. Adult stem cells are more limited and specialized than embryonic stem cells. They have the ability to make just one or two kinds of tissue, such as blood and immune system cells, brain or muscle cells. Adult stem cells also have a more limited capacity to replace themselves than do embryonic stem cells.

Umbilical cord stem cells: are adult stem cells harvested in the umbilical cord of child at birth. These cells are considered ‘adult’, even if they derive from a baby as they not able to become any type of cells like Embryonic Stem Cells can do, they can only differentiate in a few types of cells.

Multipotent cells:  Cells that are only able to develop into a limited number of cell types related to the tissue where the stem cells were harvested.

Pluripotent cells:  are cells who can become any other type of cells. Embryonic Stem Cells are pluripotent.

In vitro fertilizationrefers to a lab technique where a woman egg is exposed to sperm in a Petri dish. The exposure under the right conditions usually leads to the development of an embryo which can either be implanted in a womb of a woman for reproduction or stored for further reproductive or treatment uses.

Telomeres: are the caps that protect the end of chromosomes. Each time our cells divide, their telomeres get shorter until they are so short that the DNA loses its functionality and as a result, the cells stop dividing and die. In other words, the length of the telomeres define our biological clock. By increasing the length of the telomeres, the embryonic stem cells are simply resetting the biological clock. In our study, the DNA telomere length shows an increase by an average of 14% after 12 months treatment which is unknown in the history of anti-aging treatments.

Q?WHERE DO THE EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS COME FROM?

In Vitro Fertilization techniques require the production of more embryos than needed at implantation. Healthy unused embryos are then selected to be developed into Embryonic Stem Cells. Once the 150 stem cells of the early embryo are harvested, they can be cultured to produce trillions of them over time.

Q?WHY CHOOSE EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS?

While iPS cells are an exciting discovery, these cells could never be used in patients because the use of viruses to reprogram these adult cells predisposes the cells to cancer. As a result, these cells cannot replace the use of embryonic stem cells. There is widespread agreement among leading stem cell researchers, including the scientists that developed iPS cells, that research must continue on all types of stem cells including those derived from embryos.
